About the instructor
I have been working as a freelance business analyst for the last ten years. For most of that time (and some time before), I have been applying use case techniques. It is the standard approach in many of the large organizations (Lloyds Banking Group, GlaxoSmithKline, Sky) in the UK for which I have worked to capture functional requirements.
Like many business analysts, I look back on the work I have completed and look for ways I can improve. I’ve made plenty of mistakes when applying use case techniques but have learned from those lessons.
I’ve discovered that delivering a high quality use case model is not rocket science but, like any skill, acquiring hard earned experience is the key to success. I have also found that you can develop your skill more quickly by learning from more experienced business analysts.
As a freelancer, I have to work hard at improving my skills as they are critical to my success. I work on a contract basis with contracts varying from 6 months to a year or longer, if offered. I am fortunate that I have only been out of contract for one period of six months in ten years of contracting.
I decided to design this course from the ground up after feedback I received on my blog (www.businessanalystmentor.com).
I had been writing the blog for over a year and had written an eBook for those who want to start a career as a business analyst.
I conducted a survey for the readers of the eBook and my blog and discovered that over 50% of the readers had either learnt their skills on the job or had been given the role without any formal training.
My role as Marketing and Communications director at the UK chapter of IIBA (International Institute for Business Analysis) told me that the business analyst role is being professionalized so our employers are increasingly expecting us to know and apply best practice.
I had mentored colleagues with no experience in use case modeling and realized how intimidating use cases can be. They are often perceived as being technical whereas, in fact, they are intended to help you bridge the gap with the business and help them express their functional requirements in a way they can understand.
I had started my blog with a few introductory articles on use cases and the techniques and thought I could help accelerate progress up the learning curve by designing a course that gives you real world experience, based on the lessons that I had learnt.
